“Something doesn’t seem right — but I can’t explain what.”
Parents know their babies. If your instinct says something is off — feeding is a struggle, sleep is fragmented beyond what’s expected, your baby seems uncomfortable much of the time — that’s worth investigating, even when tests come back clear.
Osteopathy for babies and children looks at the whole body: the tensions that can remain after birth, the way the structure of the head and neck relates to feeding and breathing, the nervous system’s state of ease or strain. It is not a cure for everything — but it often finds things that haven’t been looked at yet.
Yusuke Sakata (BSc Osteopathy) has worked with children from newborn age through adolescence. He sees babies alongside their mothers at postnatal appointments, and children brought in independently for a range of concerns.
Common reasons parents bring their children to OQ
Newborns and infants
- Feeding difficulties — latching problems, slow feeding, clicking
- Colic and persistent unsettledness
- Poor sleep or difficulty settling
- Head shape concerns (plagiocephaly, brachycephaly)
- Torticollis — head tilting or preference for one side
- Reflux and digestive discomfort
- Tension patterns after a long or difficult birth
- Forceps or ventouse delivery concerns
Toddlers and older children
- Recurring ear infections or glue ear
- Mouth breathing and jaw tension
- Growing pains and postural concerns
- After falls, accidents, or sporting injuries
- Developmental support (in conjunction with specialist care)
- Recurrent headaches
What a session with a baby or child looks like
For newborns and infants, we start by talking with you — birth history, feeding, sleep, what you’ve noticed. The baby stays with you throughout, feeding or resting as needed. Treatment uses very light touch: the pressure is often less than the weight of a coin. Babies frequently relax or fall asleep during treatment, which is a good sign.
For older children, we adapt the assessment and treatment to their age and comfort. Nothing is done without the child’s cooperation. Parents observe throughout.
Frequently asked questions
Q. My baby is only 2 weeks old. Is it safe to come?
Yes. Newborns can be seen from birth. The earlier a tension pattern is addressed, the less entrenched it tends to become. Treatment for newborns uses extremely light touch and is very well tolerated.
Q. My child has already been seen by a paediatrician. Should I still come?
Osteopathy and paediatric medicine look at different things. If your paediatrician has assessed your child and found nothing of medical concern but something still seems off, osteopathy can look at the structural and neurological picture. We always recommend continuing with your paediatrician alongside any osteopathic care.
Q. How many sessions will my baby need?
It depends on the concern and how the baby responds. Many parents notice a shift after 1–3 sessions for birth-related tension. Some situations require more. We’ll give you an honest assessment after the first session — including if we think osteopathy isn’t the right approach for your child’s situation.
