Your body just did something extraordinary. It deserves proper care.
The postnatal period is one of the most significant physical transitions a body goes through — and one of the most under-supported. You’re expected to recover while simultaneously caring for a newborn, often on broken sleep, in a body that has been fundamentally reorganised by pregnancy and birth.
For women living in Japan away from family support networks, this period can be especially isolating. OQ sees a number of international patients in exactly this situation — and we take the time to actually listen.
What brings postnatal women to OQ
- Low back pain and sacral pain that hasn’t resolved
- Pelvic girdle pain or hip discomfort
- Tension from breastfeeding posture (neck, upper back, shoulders)
- Persistent fatigue that sleep doesn’t fix
- Postnatal thyroid changes (postpartum thyroiditis)
- Diastasis recti — abdominal separation
- Pelvic floor heaviness or pressure
- Feeling disconnected from your body or slow to recover
- Caesarean scar tension (we can work with scar tissue gently)
- Hormonal mood changes — alongside appropriate medical support
When can I come?
Most women come from around 6 weeks postpartum, once their postnatal check has cleared them. If you had a caesarean section, we’d typically suggest waiting until your scar has closed (usually 6–8 weeks), though we can still work with other areas before then.
There’s no upper limit. Whether you’re 3 months or 3 years postpartum, the body can still carry patterns from birth. If something hasn’t resolved, it’s worth addressing.
Can I bring my baby?
Yes. Babies and young children are welcome at OQ. If your baby needs feeding during the session, that’s completely fine — we work around it. We also see babies and infants themselves if there are feeding difficulties, unsettledness, or other concerns after birth. → Osteopathy for babies and children
What a postnatal session looks like
We start by listening — your birth experience, how recovery has gone, what’s most pressing right now. We assess your whole body: posture, pelvis, diaphragm, the way everything has reorganised since birth. Treatment is gentle. We don’t use forceful manipulation. Many women find the sessions deeply settling at a time when their body is rarely given full attention.
Frequently asked questions
Q. I’m breastfeeding. Is osteopathic treatment safe?
Yes. Osteopathic treatment does not involve any substances and is safe during breastfeeding. If you’re taking any supplements or medications, mention them at your first visit.
Q. I had a difficult birth. Will talking about it be part of the session?
Only as much as is relevant and comfortable for you. We’ll ask about your birth briefly to understand the physical context — position, duration, interventions — because it shapes what we look for in the body. We’re not here to debrief the emotional experience, though we do listen. If you’d rather keep it brief, that’s completely fine.
Q. My Japanese isn’t good enough to explain everything I’m feeling. Can you help?
This is exactly why English sessions exist at OQ. Yusuke Sakata is fully fluent in English. You can explain everything — your symptoms, your concerns, your birth story — in English, without worrying about translation.
