Infant & Baby Osteopathy in Kyoto
Osteopathy for newborns and infants is rare in Japan — and even rarer with English-speaking practitioners. At OQ, Yusuke Sakata BSc(Ost) has worked with babies from just days old through toddlerhood. Sessions are on the ground floor in central Kyoto, and are conducted fully in English.
Why would a baby need osteopathy?
Birth — even a straightforward one — puts significant mechanical stress on a newborn. The skull, spine, and soft tissues compress and mould during delivery, and in most cases this resolves naturally within the first few days. Sometimes it doesn’t.
Babies brought to OQ are often those whose parents sense something isn’t quite right — the baby who can only feed comfortably on one side, who seems unsettled despite all needs being met, who has a noticeable head shape asymmetry, or who cries persistently without apparent cause.
What conditions do we see in infants?
- Feeding difficulties and latch asymmetry (one side preferred)
- Colic and persistent crying
- Sleep difficulties and unsettled behaviour
- Plagiocephaly (head shape asymmetry / flat head)
- Torticollis (head tilt or restricted neck rotation)
- Reflux and digestive discomfort
- Post-forceps or ventouse delivery concerns
- Post-caesarean birth concerns
- General check-up after a difficult delivery
Is osteopathy safe for babies?
Yes, in qualified hands. Infant osteopathy does not involve any manipulation or forceful techniques. The work is extremely gentle — light contact, sustained holds, and careful attention to how the baby’s body responds. Yusuke holds a BSc(Ost) from Swansea University and has trained specifically in paediatric and cranial osteopathy.
Sessions are calm. Parents stay present throughout. The baby can feed, be held, or rest as needed during treatment.
What to expect at a baby’s first session
The first session is 60 minutes. We’ll spend time understanding the birth history, any concerns since birth, feeding patterns, and sleep. Then a gentle hands-on assessment of the baby’s cranium, spine, and pelvis — followed by treatment if appropriate.
Many parents notice a difference in the days following a session — sometimes the baby sleeps more deeply, feeds more symmetrically, or simply seems more settled. We’ll be honest about what we observe and what we’d recommend.
A note for foreign parents in Kyoto
Finding English-speaking paediatric care in Kyoto can be difficult. If your baby has concerns that your Japanese-language paediatrician hasn’t been able to resolve, or you simply want a second opinion in English, we’re here. Yusuke conducts full sessions in English and is familiar with working with international families.

Frequently asked questions
How old does a baby need to be for osteopathy?
There is no minimum age. Yusuke has worked with babies from a few days old. The techniques used for newborns are adapted accordingly — extremely light touch, slow pace, and careful attention to the baby’s responses throughout.
How many sessions will my baby need?
This varies considerably. Some babies with specific birth-related tension resolve well in two to three sessions. Others with more complex presentations may need more. We’ll give you an honest assessment at the first visit rather than committing to a course of treatment upfront.
My baby has a flat head. Can osteopathy help?
Osteopathy can address the underlying tension patterns that contribute to head shape asymmetry — particularly when caught early (before four to five months). It is not a substitute for positioning advice or, in severe cases, helmet therapy, but it can be a useful part of an early intervention approach. We’ll assess your baby and tell you honestly what we think is appropriate.
