Newborns and young infants are Dr. Sakata’s specialty within the paediatric area. This page is for babies from birth to approximately 18 months.
For older children, please see our Children’s Osteopathy page.
Birth Is a Physical Event
The passage through the birth canal subjects the baby’s head and neck to significant compressive and torsional forces. The cranial bones — which remain unfused at birth precisely to allow this — can carry residual strain patterns from this process.
In most cases, these resolve naturally over weeks. In some cases, they persist and may contribute to:
- Positional head preference (always turning to one side)
- Plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome)
- Colic and excessive crying
- Breastfeeding difficulties (preference for one side)
- Irritability and poor sleep
- Torticollis (neck tilting)
Births involving long labour, assisted delivery (forceps, ventouse), or caesarean section may carry higher incidence of retained cranial strain.
What Cranial Osteopathy Involves
The techniques used for babies are extraordinarily gentle — very light contact with the skull, sacrum, and body. No manipulation. No sudden movements.
Treatment can be performed while the baby is held, feeding, or sleeping.
The goal is to allow the cranial bones to complete their natural self-correction by gently removing mechanical restrictions.
When to Come
The earlier, the better. The cranial bones are most responsive in the first weeks of life. We typically recommend assessment at 4–8 weeks as an optimal window, though we see babies at any age.
