Knee & Hip Pain
Knee and hip pain are among the most common presentations we see — particularly in middle-aged and older adults, as well as athletes. Dr. Sota Omura is our specialist for knee and hip problems, with expertise in gait analysis and lower limb biomechanics.
Why the Knee Suffers
The knee is a hinge joint caught between two very mobile joints — the ankle and the hip. It absorbs compensation from both directions. When the hip doesn’t extend fully (common in desk workers), the lumbar spine and knee compensate. When the foot pronates excessively, the knee follows internally, creating medial compartment loading. The knee itself is often not the origin of the problem.
Common Presentations
Osteoarthritis
We don’t reverse cartilage wear. But we can change the loading pattern — redistribution of mechanical stress through gait correction and muscle activation significantly reduces pain and slows progression.
Runner’s Knee (IT Band Syndrome)
Hip abductor weakness, combined with excessive pronation, is the most common biomechanical driver. Rest alone doesn’t fix it.
Post-Surgical Rehabilitation
After total knee or hip replacement, the gait pattern needs progressive re-education. We work with patients weeks to months after surgery to maximise functional recovery.
Hip Stiffness
Hip capsular restrictions, psoas tension, and reduced hip extension in walking are often amenable to osteopathic treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. I was told I need surgery. Should I try osteopathy first?
For degenerative conditions (OA, meniscal wear), conservative management often achieves comparable outcomes to surgery for many patients. It is worth a proper assessment before committing to surgery.
